What matters most to you?

In short
  • "Green gas" covers two realities: genuinely injected Belgian biogas, or carbon offsetting.
  • Physically injected biomethane is still rare in Belgium (~14 injection sites, ~416 GWh/year).
  • DATS 24 and Trevion rely on Belgian biogas; Bolt and Mega on carbon offsetting.
  • Expect a budget close to standard natural gas: ~€1,585 to €1,740/year for 17,000 kWh.

Biomethane vs carbon offset: do not confuse them

Before choosing a "green gas" plan, understand what it really covers — the difference is large.

Biomethane (physical green gas) is produced by methanising organic waste and then injected into the grid. It is the most virtuous option, but the Belgian sector is still in its infancy.

Carbon offsetting neutralises a fossil gas’s emissions via carbon credits: the gas delivered is still natural gas, but its footprint is "offset".

No residential plan delivers 100% biomethane today: it is partial Belgian biogas (DATS 24, Trevion) or carbon neutrality (Bolt, Mega).

If local production matters to you, favour Belgian biogas (DATS 24, Trevion) over offsetting alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is green gas really biomethane?

Rarely at 100%. In Belgium, injected biomethane is still limited (~14 sites). Most plans rely on partial Belgian biogas or carbon offsetting of natural gas.

Is green gas more expensive than standard gas?

Slightly, depending on the plan: expect ~€1,585 to €1,740/year for 17,000 kWh, a moderate premium over the cheapest natural gas.

Which green gas plan should I choose in Belgium?

For genuine Belgian biogas, DATS 24 and Trevion; for carbon neutrality, Bolt (offset included) or Mega (CO₂ option). It depends on your region and your sourcing requirements.

Is biomethane compatible with my boiler?

Yes. Injected biomethane has the same quality as natural gas and works with existing boilers, with no modification.
